The present day Secunderabad Division takes its roots from erstwhile Nizam Guaranteed State Railway which was established in 1869. The Wadi-Secunderabad line was first built with Nizam's finances and then it was extended up to Warangal by 1886.

Secunderabad Division was formed on 2nd October 1966 with broad gauge as well as meter gauge systems. The meter gauge system was carved out from Secunderabad division to form Hyderabad division on 17thNovember 1977.  Secunderabad division serves four states viz. Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It has 1490.86 route Kilometers of track out of which 1096.28 Kms are in Telangana, 180.16 Kms in Maharashtra, 162.48 Kms in Karnataka and 51.94 Kms in Andhra Pradesh. Out of 1490.86 route kilometers of track, 1008.60 Kms is electrified (67.65%). There are in all 156 stations out of which 115 stations are situated in Telangana, 18 stations in Maharashtra, 21 in Karnataka and 2 stations in Andhra Pradesh.

Secunderabad Division is the most important Division of South Central Railway and ranks amongst the top five divisions of Indian Railways in terms of freight loading. It has a dedicated work force of 22,300 employees. It handles passenger traffic as well as freight traffic. Freight traffic is being handled at 77 stations spread throughout the division, which includes 14 loading and unloading points of Food Corporation of India Ltd. Besides the division serves two Container Depotsat Sanathnagar and Nagalapalli and 8 power generating units.

Passenger terminals at Secunderabad & Hyderabad handle around 274 Mail/Express passenger trains daily. These are among the largest passenger terminals of the country. In addition, the Division has the unique distinction of successfully running a commuter system in the twin cities area in partnership with the State Government.

The Division hosts major infrastructural facilities like the Flash butt Welding plant at Moula-Ali, Electric Loco Sheds at Lalaguda & Kazipet, Diesel Loco Shed at Kazipet and 6 mega ballast Depots, which not only serve the need of the Division but also thatof other divisions of South Central Railway.

Secunderabad Division carried 66.377 million tonnes of freight (64% of South Central Railway) and 131.28 millions of passengers (35% of South Central Railway) during the financial year 2017-18. Coal from Singareni Collieries and Western Collieries Ltd. contributed nearly 66% towards originating freight loading, followed by Cement and Clinker with 25% contribution.Gross earnings of the division during the financial year 2017-18 stood at Rs.7246.31 Crores.

Besides setting mammoth targets and chasing with utmost devotion to achieve the set goals, this division is the breeding ground of several innovations, technological applications, best management practices and initiation of several schemes for the benefit of customers/passengers.
